Introduction to Human Design

Just like an Astrology Birth Chart Report or a Numerology Report, a Human Design Report is a personal development tool that offers us to better understand our way of being and acting, to better appreciate our different potentials and to better express our true nature.

If Astrology and Numerology origins have been lost through the centuries, the Human Design origin is well known and despite it may be questioned by materialists, its mystical source does not affect its usefulness for anybody taking time to study it with the necessary openness needed for such an esoteric science.

To better understand Human Design, you first need to get your personnal chart on this page : get your free chart. You will get such a picture.

Unlike Astrology, Human Design uses the planets positions on two different dates: the birth date in the “Personality” column in black and the incarnation date in the “Design” column in red. The incarnation date is about 3 months before the birth date. For an exact calculation, it’s necessary to use the position of the birth Sun in the Astrology circle. Once this position is known, the incarnation Sun is 88° before the birth Sun. That’s the reason why it’s necessary for any complete Human Design explanation to introduce the Mandala. In my Mandala, you could see both Suns and both Earths outside the circle. They are forming what is called the Incarnation Cross. If the zodiac signs are present in the Mandala, they are only present as an information for people used with Astrology.

Unlike astrology, in Human Design, the position of the stars is not expressed in degrees but is expressed in Gates and Lines. The Mandala circle is divided into 64 areas called Gates and each of these Gates is divided into 6 areas called Lines. In the example above, the Birth Sun (Personality) is located in Gate 4 and Line 6. When a star is in a Gate, it activates the Gate. In order to better visualize it, the active Gates are colored in the Mandala.

Each of the Mandala Gates is associated to an Energy Center visible in the Human Design Chart. There are 9 Energy Centers: the Crown, the Ajna, the Throat, the G, the Heart, the Splenic, the Solar Plexus, the Sacral and the Root. The Centers names refer to the Chakras ones, but Ra Uru Hu explained us that in the eighteenth century, when Uranus and Neptune were discovered, humans evolved from 7 Centers to 9 Centers. The Heart Chakra splitted into two centers, the G and the Heart, and the Solar Plexus Chakra splitted into two centers, the Splenic which is about Intuitions and the Solar Plexus which is about Emotions. You may find names variations concerning the Human Design centers. Eg: the Head for the Crown, the Mind for the Ajna, the Self for the G, the Ego for the Heart, the Emotion Center for the Solar Plexus…

In the Human Design Chart, the 64 Gates are arranged in the nine Centers and they are connecting the Centers through Channels. When a Gate is activated by a planet, the Gate number is encircled and the energy that leaves the Gate in the Channel is symbolized by a black, a red or a red & black striped color, depending on whether the Gate is activated by the birth date (Personality), the incarnation date (Design) or by both dates.

When two Gates from the same Channel are activated, they activate the Channel and the energy circulating through this Channel defines the two associated Centers. In the example above, with Gates 59 and 6 activated, Channel 6-59 is active and both the Sacral (in orange) and the Solar Plexus (in yellow) are defined. To differentiate a defined Center to an undefined one, it is put in color in the Chart. Since no Channel from the Splenic (white triangle) is activated in this Chart, the Splenic is undefined. Attention, the definition or undefinition of Centers in Human Design has nothing to do with opened or blocked Chakras.

Once a Human Design Chart has been built with all the activated Gates and the defined and undefined Centers sets, it becomes possible to know the Type and Authority of a person.

There are 5 different Types: Reflectors, Projectors, Manifestors, Generators and Manifesting-Generators. The different Types are detailed in a dedicated page, but know that to respect your Type, you have a strategy of action to respect. Not respecting your strategy will stray you from your own nature and depending on your Type, you will ressent disappointment, bitterness, anger or frustration at the end of your action.

There are 6 different Authorities: Emotional Clarity, Sacral Instinct, Spleen Intuitions, Heart Will, Self Guidance and Outer Process. The Authority represents how we should take our decisions. The different Authorities are also detailed in a dedicated page.

The Profile of someone in Human Design is not defined according to his Chart but according to the Lines in which the Birth Sun and Incarnation Sun are, regardless of the Gates activated by these two Suns. In the example above, with the Birth Sun in Line 6 (Personality) and the Incarnation Sun in Line 2 (Design), the Profile is 6/2. A Line can have six different values: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6. As the Incarnation Sun is 88° before the Birth Sun, for each Line value for the Birth Sun, there are only two possible Line values for the Incarnation Sun. That’s the reason why there’s only 12 possible profiles: 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6, 4/6, 4/1, 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3. Your Profile explains the conscious and unconscious aspects of your personality.

Finally, the two Suns and the two Earths, which are symbolized in the Mandala outside the circle, are defining the Incarnation Cross. You should consider the content of this Incarnation Cross as a fil rouge in your life and in no way as the goal of your Incarnation. There are 192 different Incarnations Crosses and the list is available on a dedicated page.
